Measuring for Wooden Blinds - Step by Step

Tools you’ll need:

All you need is a steel tape measure, pencil and pad.

Helpful Tips Before You Begin Measuring for Wooden Blinds

  • We recommend using only a steel tape measure for accuracy.
  • Don’t mix up width and height measurements. Note them clearly.
  • If you’re measuring for more than one window, measure each one individually. Never presume that windows of similar appearance are the same size.

How to Measure for Wooden Blinds: Inside Recess

To fit your wooden blind inside the window recess follow these instructions. Don’t worry about making any deductions. When you choose recess as your installation method, we make the necessary deductions to ensure your blind fits neatly without the blind or fittings scraping against the wall and the slats and bottom rail will hang beautifully without dragging on the window sill.

Step 1

Measure the Width

Measure the width of your window recess in three places, top middle and bottom. Use the smallest measurement as your width.

Step 2

Measure the Drop

Measure the drop of your window recess in three places, top middle and bottom. Use the smallest measurement as your drop.

Step 3

Enter your Measurements

Go to your chosen product, enter your width and drop measurements, select Inside Recess as your sizing option.

Deductions

We will make a small deduction to the width of your blind when you select Inside Recess to accommodate the brackets.

Important Notes

Factor in Obstructions

If you have obstructions within your recess e.g. tiles, measure between these two points and use this as your width measurement.

Check your Recess Depth

Ensure you have at least 5cm clearance between the front of your window recess and the edge of any obstruction.

How to Measure for Wooden Blinds: Exact Size

To fit your wooden blind outside the window recess follow these instructions. Your blind will be made exactly to the size you give us. As per the instructions you’ll add extra width and drop to the window space so your wooden blinds overlap the recessed space neatly.

Step 1

Measure the Width

Decide how much overlap you want your blind to have on each side of your window recess. Measure this width.

Step 2

Measure the Drop

Measure the drop from where you want the top of the blind to start, and the bottom to finish. This is your drop measurement.

Step 3

Enter your Measurements

Go to your chosen product, enter your width and drop measurements, select Exact Size as your sizing option.

Note

We will not make any deductions to your measurements when you select the Exact size option.

Important Notes

Left and Right Overlap

We recommend your blind overlaps the window recess by at least 5cm on each side (10cm overall). You will eliminate more light the more the blind overlaps the recess.

Top Overlap

We recommend your blind overlaps the top of the window recess by at least 7cm.

Bottom Overlap

If your window sill protrudes more than 5cm, you should stop your blind at this point. Be aware of obstructions such as radiators when measuring your drop.

How to Measure for Wooden Blinds: Split Blinds

To feature multiple wooden blinds in a single window, follow these measuring instructions. Consider splitting blinds when you have a wide single window or a defined split down the middle of the window.

Step 1

Mark your Split Point

Use a pencil to make a small mark where you'd like to split your blinds.

Step 2

Measure the Width - Recess Size

Measure between the edge of your window recess and your split point mark.

Measure the Width - Exact Size

If you're mounting your split blinds outside the window recess, measure from your split point mark to where you want your blind to finish.

Step 3

Measure the Drop - Recess Size

Measure the drop of your window recess in three places. Use the smallest measurement as your width.

Measure the Drop - Exact Size

Measure the drop from where you want the top of the blind to start, and the bottom to finish. This is your drop measurement.

Step 4

Enter your Measurements

Go to your chosen product, enter your width and drop measurements, select Inside Recess or Exact Size depending on which way you want to mount the blinds.

Deductions
Inside Recess

We will make a small deduction to the width of your blind when you select ‘Recess Size" to accommodate the brackets.

Exact Size

We will not make any deductions to your measurements when you select the Exact size option.

Important Notes

Recommened Split Point

If you have a vertical window mullion or door frame, we'd suggest using this as your split point. Alternatively use the centre of the window you’re covering.

Blind Gap

There will be a small gap between the blinds to accommodate the brackets. The gap will be determined by how close you install the central brackets.

Factor in Obstructions

If you have any obstructions within your recess such as tiles, measure between this and your split point mark, use this as your width measurement.

Bottom Overlap

Be aware of obstructions such as radiators when measuring your drop. If your window sill protrudes more than 5cm, you should stop your blind at this point.
